Presented By Panos N. Papapanou, DDS, PhD

Dr. Panos N. Papapanou, DDS, PhD is a Professor of Dental Medicine, Chair of the Section of Oral, Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Director of the Division of  Periodontics at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, in New York, NY. During his bright career as an educator and investigator, Dr. Papapanou was awarded by the American Academy of Periodontics (AAP), and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), being also the recipient of relevant grants for the National Institute of Health (NIH) and author of more than 150 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Papapanou was one of the three professionals designated as co-chairs of the task force created for the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. This task force met at a World Workshop to analyze the classification system  existing at that time and create a classification more in current with clinical and scientific advances in Periodontology, Dental Implantology, Oral Microbiology and Oral Biology. The task force was comprised of outstanding Periodontists from all over the World recruited by the AAP and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP).

Theodore J. Urban, PHD

Theodore J. Urban, PhD, (1926-1990) came to Creighton in 1954. He was a faculty member, Chair of Oral Biology, and Associate Dean in the School of Dentistry. He received the University’s Distinguished Service Award in 1984, and was honored four times as Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Urban was a tireless advocate for and mentor to his students. He never failed to offer a guiding hand or a needed admonishment for the personal welfare and professional development of all his students. He quietly accomplished whatever needed to be done, always with a smile and sense of humor.

Dr. Urban’s presence in our dental school is truly missed. However, with this endowment, his memory and legacy will be permanently preserved through an annual lecture that is part of the continuing education program at the School of Dentistry.

The Dr. Theodore J. Urban, PhD Continuing Education Lecture was founded by the generous support of one of Dr. Urban’s former students.
